Immunization Program:
Clinics
Provide routine immunizations for uninsured and under-insured persons 2 months of age and older. Three clinics are held each month at the County Office Building.

 Appointments:  Visits are by appointment.
     Phone: (607) 753-5203
     Hours: Mon - Fri, 8 a.m. - 12 noon and 1 - 4 p.m.

What if I am sick?
A person with a mild, common illness, such as a cold with a low-grade fever, does not have to wait to be vaccinated. A person with a compromised immune system, as occurs with cancer patients, may need to wait on certain vaccines.  However, others, such as influenza are important to receive if a person’s immune system is compromised.  If you are unsure of your situation, please call and ask to speak with a nurse.

What to bring to immunization visit:
Your immunization record.  This is a record that was given to you in which the doctor's office or clinic has written the immunizations that were given.   An immunization record is started when a child receives his/her first vaccination and should be updated at each vaccination visit.

Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

What is the cost?
Vaccines are provided for under and uninsured children up to age 19 years through the Vaccines for Children Program, and there is no fee charged.  There is a fee charged for most adult vaccines.  The charge is for the cost of the vaccine.  Call the Immunization Program at 753-5203 for that information.

Most of the doctors in Cortland County are enrolled in the Vaccines for Children Program.  For more information about that program and how it helps get children vaccinated at a reasonable cost,  click here.

What if I am pregnant ?
Vaccinations are an important concern for pregnant women.  When possible, get necessary vaccines before pregnancy.  However, it may also be important to receive some vaccines during pregnancy.  The influenza vaccine is one that is important to receive during that time.   CDC has clear guidelines for the use of vaccines during pregnancy. Talk with your doctor.  Click here for more information.

Flu Clinics
For general information about flu, the vaccine and who should receive it, and to find a flu vaccination clinic in your area, click here.

Influenza is a serious disease, and people of any age can get it. In an average year, the flu causes 36,000 deaths (mostly among those aged 65 years or older) and more than 200,000 hospitalizations in the United States. The "flu season" in the United States is usually from November through April each year. During this time, flu viruses are circulating in the population. An annual flu vaccine (either the flu shot or the nasal-spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce your risk of getting the flu.

Who is eligible to attend the flu clinics?
Both the flu and pneumonia vaccines are offered. The flu vaccine is available to persons 18 years of age and older. The pneumonia vaccine is offered to persons age 50 to 64 with a chronic illness, and all adults age 65 and over who have never received the vaccine.

Public Flu Clinic schedules
Flu vaccination clinics are scheduled at 12 different locations, usually in late October or early November.

What to bring to the flu shot clinic:
Medicare Part B enrollees need to bring their Medicare Card (red & blue striped card) to the clinics. Personal immunization records will be updated for those who bring them.

Cost:
For individuals not enrolled in Medicare Part B, a contribution of $20 for the flu shot and $30 for the pneumococcal shot is requested.  Traditional Medicare insurance will be billed for those with Medicare Part B.  People with Medicare Managed Care or Medicaid insurance should get their vaccination from their regular health care provider.   Receipts are provided.

Immunization Registry

What is it?
The New York State Immunization Information System is a free, web-based statewide immunization information system, also called a registry, which maintains computerized immunization data of persons of all ages in a confidential and secure manner.

A Public Health Law signed in August of 2006 mandated the creation of a statewide registry for the purposes of collecting and storing required information on vaccinations administered to all persons less than 19 years of age.

Benefits:
An immunization registry acts as a connection between the multiple providers a family may have and keeps track of which immunizations have already been given, and which ones are needed.  It helps sustain high immunization rates and low disease levels.  It also helps ensure children get only the vaccines they need.

Healthy People 2010 goal
The New York State Immunization Program, in conjunction with the Healthy People Year 2010 goals, seeks to meet or exceed a 90% statewide immunization coverage level for two-year-old children.  The National Immunization Survey indicates that only 80.15% of children in Upstate New York are age-appropriately immunized by the age of two.  New York will need to increase its rates by 2.5% per year in order to meet the Healthy People 2010 goal.

Assessment, Feedback, Incentives, and Exchange (AFIX)
AFIX is a quality improvement strategy to raise immunization coverage levels. The  approach provides a quality assurance measure for public and private immunization providers, presents an excellent educational opportunity, encourages private and public partnerships, and increases awareness among immunization providers.

The immunization program provides these on-site provider-based immunization assessments to measure1 & 2 year-old coverage levels, and to provide helpful feedback.  A written report is prepared and shared with the office that outlines coverage levels and suggested interventions to improve and sustain the levels.  Many local offices have participated in these assessments.  Call the Immunization Program at 753-5203 if your office is interested.
